New Resources Equip PHOs to Respond to Reproductive Coercion

by Andrea Trudden, Vice President, Communications & Marketing

Every day, pregnancy help organizations meet women facing complicated and often dangerous situations. While many arrive seeking support for an unexpected pregnancy, some are also navigating abusive relationships, coercion, trafficking, or violence behind closed doors.

Unfortunately, Heartbeat International is hearing more stories of women who have been pressured into taking abortion drugs or who were unknowingly given abortion-inducing medication without their knowledge or consent.

To help pregnancy help organizations respond to these growing concerns, Heartbeat has developed two new resources: a national tracker documenting publicly reported cases of abortion pill poisonings and forced abortions, and a companion guide connecting women with emergency and community resources when safety concerns arise.Tracker Abortion Poisonings

Why We Created These Resources

Through the Abortion Pill Rescue Network, we regularly hear from women experiencing intense pressure from boyfriends, spouses, or family members to end their pregnancies. In some situations, that pressure escalates into deception, threats, or criminal acts.

While these "publicly reported" cases represent only incidents that have resulted in news coverage or legal action, they illustrate a troubling pattern that deserves greater awareness.

The abortion pill poisoning tracker serves several important purposes:

  • Raise awareness that abortion pill poisoning and reproductive coercion are real and documented forms of abuse.
  • Provide an educational resource for supporters, community leaders, and policymakers.
  • Document publicly reported cases as they emerge to demonstrate that these incidents are not isolated events.

How You Can Use the Tracker to Educate Your Community

The abortion pill poisoning tracker is designed to help pregnancy help organizations educate their communities about a growing form of reproductive coercion that often goes unnoticed.

Consider using it to:

  • Share with donors and supporters to help them better understand the increasingly complex situations pregnancy help organizations encounter as they care for women facing coercion and abuse.
  • Equip churches and community partners with factual, publicly documented examples of abortion pill poisoning and forced abortion.
  • Reference during presentations, fundraising events, and educational outreach to demonstrate the importance of pregnancy help services.
  • Provide to local media or policymakers when discussing the consequences of the expanding availability of abortion drugs.
  • Raise awareness on social media by sharing the tracker as new cases are added.

Companion Guide Equips Staff to Respond

While the tracker is intended to educate the public, Heartbeat has also developed a companion guide specifically for pregnancy help organizations.

This resource equips staff and volunteers to respond when a client discloses reproductive coercion, abortion pill poisoning, domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault, or other safety concerns by connecting women with trusted emergency and community resources.

The guide can be incorporated into staff training and used to:

  • Train staff and volunteers to recognize signs of reproductive coercion and abuse.
  • Connect clients with appropriate emergency and community resources when safety concerns arise.
  • Strengthen referral relationships with local domestic violence shelters, trafficking organizations, crisis centers, and other support services.
  • Help your team respond confidently and compassionately when difficult situations arise.

A Reminder for Staff

If a client believes someone has given her medication without her knowledge, is attempting to force her to take abortion drugs, or she fears for her immediate safety, encourage her to call or text 911 immediately. Your organization may be one of the first safe places where she feels comfortable telling her story. Being prepared to respond appropriately can make a life-changing difference.

The tracker will continue to be updated as additional publicly reported cases emerge.

Together, these resources help pregnancy help organizations educate their communities, prepare their teams, and respond compassionately when women face coercion, abuse, or violence. By increasing awareness and equipping staff with practical tools, we can better protect women, connect them with the support they need, and continue offering hope in some of life's most difficult circumstances.
