When the Marathon Becomes a Sprint

by Kelly McCallister, BSN, RN, LAS

From Marathon to SprintWorking in pregnancy help, it is surmised rather quickly that the lives served are often complicated and the needs are complex. A client’s challenge is not limited to her pregnancy, but to other life circumstances such as employment, housing, relationships, academics, material needs, etc. As pregnancy help advocates, our role is to provide resources to help alleviate those challenges while also empowering and equipping her as she sets forth a plan for her pregnancy and beyond. At times, our relationships can last for years and even throughout subsequent pregnancies - hence, a marathon.

There is, however, a specific time in pregnancy help when we have to pick up the pace, considerably - Abortion Pill Reversal.

Chemical abortion begins with the drug mifepristone. Mifepristone competes to bind with progesterone receptors. Progesterone is a natural hormone that is needed to sustain a pregnancy. By competing for progesterone receptors, mifepristone attempts to cut off the progesterone’s necessary functions in order to end the pregnancy. Mifepristone is rapidly absorbed, peaking at approximately 90 minutes after ingestion, and has a half life of 12-72hrs.

The term “compete” signifies a battle or a race between mifepristone and progesterone. To ensure that the progesterone has every advantage of winning this race, action needs to be taken quickly. Over 75% of the contacts to the Abortion Pill Reversal Hotline call within the first 24hrs after taking mifepristone. This means that we are in the running when a woman reaches out after she changes her mind about her chemical abortion.

“So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air.” 1 Corinthians 9:26

Knowing that she is racing the clock against mifepristone, our APR providers in the Abortion Pill Rescue Network understand their important role of rapid response to assist the woman experiencing regret in obtaining her progesterone - giving her the best advantage of winning this race. By taking bioidentical progesterone and allowing it to become the more abundant contender, the progesterone has a better chance to overcome the mifepristone.

The marathon has now become a sprint.

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.” 1 Corinthians 9:21

The majority of mothers contacting the hotline do so later in the day and even throughout the weekend. It’s imperative that someone is there to help her win this race. A desperate mother trying to save the life of her child becomes discouraged when help is not available speedily. Many of our providers in the APR Network have agreed to take calls after hours and on weekends, some even agreeing to accept calls 24/7. We cannot say thank you enough!

“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:14

If her reversal is successful, there will be a time for peeling back the layers of challenges and assisting her with the resources to alleviate life’s circumstances. Building a relationship with her for support is still the ultimate goal. Even if her reversal is unsuccessful, there is now a foundation that has been laid. She found you in one of the darkest moments of her life and you became her safe place.

The consulting centers in the Abortion Pill Rescue Network are able to fill this role for some of our providers in the network, providing not only the short-term crucial follow up, but also the long-term support she will need. We thank you for being there as the sprint turns back into a marathon!

“...let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…” Hebrews 12:1-2

The Abortion Pill Rescue Network is a critical component in this race as the baton is passed.

To help close the gap in the race, here are a few ways you can lace up your running shoes:

  • Be ready and available to receive a call or text from the hotline!
  • Locate any 24hr pharmacies in your area that may be a feasible alternative when you assist a client after hours, in the event her preferred pharmacy is closed. Plan ahead for those with peanut allergies and prepare a pathway for her to receive progesterone as quickly as possible.
  • Establish an educational plan so that she understands how important the progesterone is to her baby’s survival and when to reach out to you for guidance.
