A medication from a website just arrived along with the daily mail in Maria’s mailbox at the end of her driveway. She watched from the window as the mail service drove away like any other day with no idea what was just placed in the envelope in her mailbox.
Maria did enter her debit card number on the website a couple of nights ago but really wasn’t sure if the medication would come, or if the website was even real. No one from the company had asked if she had a pregnancy test yet or proof of pregnancy. Maria had not even seen a doctor, had an ultrasound, or received any physical examination or screening. For the purchase to process it was only a short meeting she had to attend on her computer with someone that said they had to answer some questions to complete the process of their telehealth appointment. Then, the order would be complete.
Maria had followed through with ordering the medication but had not anticipated it would arrive so quickly.
Was this really the right choice?
Was this the best choice for her family?
This decision has significant long-term implications for her family.
Maria was married and she did not want an abortion for this child, but she and her husband agreed this seemed the best choice for their circumstances.
The Mifepristone was in the mailbox, she had spent her money on the order, and her husband said he supported this decision. Would he still support her if she did not start the abortion? Maria felt intense pressure to proceed, fearing that continuing the pregnancy could strain or jeopardize her marriage.
They already had two other children.
Maria went to the mailbox to get her mail and there it was. An envelope from the website, unmarked by a sender on the outside, but addressed to her. She brought the mail inside and with shaky hands and tears in her eyes she opened the envelope. There they were. The pills.
How did she get here?
As she held the first pill in her hand, Maria couldn’t help but wonder. What if her dates are incorrect? What if this is a pregnancy that isn’t placed where it should be in her body? She had seen so many reels and posts on her social media about ectopic pregnancies and women’s rights to medical care.
If ectopic pregnancies were so dangerous and if women are wanting safe and appropriate medical care for their reproductive choices, should women at least be required to have an ultrasound before starting an abortion? Should a physical examination and pregnancy test be required too?
No one had required an ultrasound or confirmed she was pregnant before shipping the pills.
Her husband supports the abortion decision. She can’t lose him.
She already has two other children. Inflation and the rising costs of the current economy have not made things easy on their family.
The next morning after her husband left for work, Maria felt there was no other choice. She took the first pill. She realized it would all be starting now and she and her husband could move forward with their life and put this all behind them. Maria would have his support, and she would not have the stress and concerns about having a third child she did not feel prepared for right now.
Her husband got home from work, and she fed her family their dinner. As she cleaned the kitchen and finished putting away the dishes, she started getting the kids ready for bed and tried to move through her nightly routine just like she does every other night.
Yet the same thoughts that had consumed her mind all day were only getting stronger.
She was having a harder time shaking them anymore.
This was guilt.
This was regret.
This was fear.
She regretted the abortion decision. Why did she take that pill this morning?
Is there a way to undo this? A way to reverse this?
Could she have a second chance to save her baby?
Maria searched on her phone looking for anything about reversing an abortion. She hoped there had been other women like her who had started an abortion they no longer wanted to continue.
Maria found something. Help is available with a phone number, a chat, and an email.
She immediately began dialing the number listed on the website on her cell phone.
A nurse was ready to help her and instantly she began to feel a peace come over her.
The nurse had kindness and compassion in her voice as she listened to Maria’s story and offered a connection to medical help.
Maria was quickly connected to a medical professional in her area that could offer an emergency reversal protocol. The reversal treatment provided a higher dose of the hormone already produced by her body that is required to sustain a pregnancy. Her body had already been producing the hormone, but it had become blocked through the abortion pill she took that morning. All she had to do was take the bio-identical hormone as the medical professional prescribed to attempt to outcompete and reverse the effects of the Mifepristone, the first abortion pill.
Maria could not believe it. It was just progesterone she needed. Something her body was already naturally producing.
She was thankful. Filled with relief. Overcome with hope for her second chance to be successful and save her baby’s life.
Maria shared with her husband that she had decided to try to reverse the abortion process. He told her he was so relieved and regretted he had originally supported the abortion decision.
The second chance Maria was given to choose life not only provided an opportunity to attempt to save her baby, but it also facilitated a difficult conversation that led to reconciliation of their marriage and united them as parents.
