Inviting God's Presence Into Every Day

by Michele Cheresnick, Affiliation CoordinatorIn the midst

In the midst of serving clients and carrying out the day-to-day work of a Pregnancy Help Organization, prayer can easily be pushed aside. Yet taking time to pray with staff and volunteers is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen your team and your ministry.

Prayer isn’t just a spiritual habit; it must be our priority. When we take time to pray, we set the tone for a Christ-centered culture, reminding everyone that this mission doesn’t rest on human strength but on God’s guidance and provision. Moments of prayer create unity, encourage weary hearts, and build trust among staff and volunteers, a reminder that our work is a calling, not just a task.

Each month, we will share a prayer prompt and a prayer for you to use with your team. Post it in your center’s prayer closet, pray through it together, and invite God to lead your ministry through every conversation and decision.

Standing with You in Prayer: A meaningful affiliate benefit

At Heartbeat, we’ve always made prayer for our affiliates a priority, but we want to go even further. We are intentionally lifting up you and your ministry in prayer each day—and we warmly invite you to share your needs with us.

Whenever you feel led or face a challenge, reach out and use the prayer board. Know that every request will be personally prayed over by our Heartbeat staff, with care and consistency. We want you to feel the support of our prayers as you carry out the important work God has entrusted to your team.

This is more than a benefit—it’s a partnership. Standing together in prayer, we can invite God’s guidance, strength, and peace into every conversation, decision, and moment of your ministry.

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." – Matthew 18:20

Monthly Prayer Prompt
This month, let’s focus on gratitude for God’s provision.

  • Thank Him for the donors and community partners who faithfully support your center.

  • Pray for wisdom in stewarding every gift, every hour, and every opportunity to serve.

  • Ask God to bless your physical space—that it would be a place of safety, peace, and hope for every client who enters.

  • Lift up your team, asking God to encourage, inspire, and bless their faithful service.

A Call for Unity: Building an Undefeatable Movement Through Connection

by Valerie Harkins, Executive Director of Maternity Housing Coalition and Housing SpecialistHousing Coalition Connections Article

This past month, we celebrated a milestone in our movement: the 5th Maternity Housing Networking Gathering. This year, forty-nine maternity homes came together to connect, share ideas, encourage one another, and hear the latest news shaping our regions. It was a powerful reminder that when we gather, hope multiplies, courage grows, and innovation spreads.

But here’s the truth—we cannot win if we are working in isolation. A single home might be strong, but a coalition of homes working in connection is undefeatable. That’s why we are declaring “Connection” as MHC’s theme for the coming year. Last year’s theme was “Engagement,” and together we focused on building access to education and equipping resources. We held topical virtual networking meetings, in-person networking meetings with educational updates for housing in that region, sharpened Executive Leadership skills at the Pregnancy Help Institute, completed a 6-week course on launching maternity homes, and developed (to be published) a Trauma-Informed Care training. Now it’s time to put that learning into action.

Why Connection Matters

When one maternity home discovers a new approach, launches a new program, or experiences a breakthrough, that win isn’t theirs alone—it belongs to all of us. Shared victories breathe courage into weary leaders, spark fresh creativity, and remind us that the Lord is moving in this mission.

That’s why MHC wants to hear from you. If your home has recently:

  • Started something new or revolutionary

  • Found success with a strategy or program

  • Learned important news impacting housing

…please let us know! We want to give a shout-out to your work so that the whole maternity housing community can celebrate, learn, and be encouraged.

Opportunities to Connect

This year, there are countless ways for you and your team to step into deeper connection:

  • Write a guest article about a topic on your heart for the housing community.

  • Host a regional networking gathering at your maternity home.

  • Lead a virtual networking gathering for homes across the nation.

  • Submit a presentation proposal for our annual conference.

  • Volunteer to help host our national networking event at the conference.

And remember, some of the deepest connections are made simply by sharing a meal. Inviting other homes into your world fosters connection—because real relationships are built with feet under the dining table.

New in 2025: Monthly Virtual Prayer Gatherings

We are thrilled to announce a new initiative: monthly virtual prayer gatherings for maternity homes across the country. These will be a time to pray together, intercede for one another, and grow in unity as a movement rooted in Christ. Prayer is not an afterthought; it is the foundation of all we do.

Moving Forward Together

Connection isn’t optional—it’s the very strategy that will carry us forward as a movement. Each home matters. Each leader matters. And together, we are building something that cannot be broken.

So let’s commit to connecting in every way possible this year. Because when we stand united, we don’t just run homes—we run a movement that changes the culture, welcomes life, and builds families for generations to come.

We want to hear from you! Reach out, connect, and let’s walk into this next season—together.

Light in the Darkness

by Kathy Jerman, Director of Affiliate Services Heartbat InternationalJohn 15 devotional

Every one of us who serves in the pregnancy help movement knows the reality of the battle we are engaged in. On the surface, our work can look like simply handing out baby supplies, providing ultrasounds, or offering encouragement to a mother in crisis. But beneath all of that is something deeper. We are standing in the midst of a spiritual struggle between life and death, light and darkness.

Earlier this year, when I was still working at a local pregnancy center, I was reminded of this in a vivid way. One day, word spread quickly that an ambulance was parked outside our local abortion clinic. My heart sank the moment I heard. An ambulance at an abortion clinic rarely signals anything good. Behind those walls, a tragedy was unfolding. A life had been lost, and perhaps even more - the hearts of those involved were shattered. The weight of that reality settled heavily on me, as it has on many of us when confronted with the harsh consequences of abortion.

It was a sobering reminder of the darkness that seeks to envelop us daily. That ambulance became, in my mind, a symbol of despair, of brokenness, of lives cut short and hearts shattered. It reminded me that the decisions made in those rooms ripple outward with devastating consequences—not only for the unborn but also for the mothers, fathers, and families who will carry the pain.

Yet, just two days later, I found myself staring at another ambulance. This time, it was parked outside our very own pregnancy center. But the story behind this ambulance was strikingly different. A young woman had come to us for a simple reason: to pick up supplies for her baby. In the midst of her appointment, she unexpectedly went into labor. Our nurses immediately jumped into action—not just with skill and training, but with compassion and calm assurance. They offered comfort, encouragement, and the steady presence that every mother longs for in such a moment.

As we waited for EMTs to arrive, the atmosphere in our center was completely different from the scene I had imagined at the abortion clinic just days earlier. Instead of despair, there was anticipation. Instead of loss, there was the promise of new life. Standing there, I could sense the presence of the Lord—His peace filling the room, His fingerprints all over this unexpected moment.

Those two ambulances have stayed with me. They represent the contrast we live with every day. On one side, the darkness of death and destruction. On the other side, the light of life and hope. John 1:5 says it so clearly: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

This is why we do what we do: every conversation with a client, every parenting class taught, every ultrasound offered, every prayer whispered, every act of compassion, no matter how small, is part of this great mission of pushing back the darkness. Sometimes it feels like we are just a flicker in a storm. However, the truth of God’s Word reminds us that even the smallest light has power in the darkest of darkness. And the darkness cannot win.

When I think back to those two scenes, I am reminded of the privilege we have to be bearers of light. We are ambassadors of hope. We are witnesses to God’s redemptive work in the lives of mothers and families. We are frontline workers in a battle where every smile, every prayer, every gentle word of truth makes a difference.

So, when the days feel heavy and the stories weigh on your heart, remember those two ambulances. Let them remind you of the incredible difference we are making—between despair and hope, between death and life. Take courage in knowing that the mission you serve in is one that will endure—it cannot be overcome.

I count it a true joy and privilege to serve in this calling alongside you. Together, we carry the light of Christ into the darkest places, and that light only grows stronger with every step of faith.

The darkness will never prevail—victory belongs to the Lord, and we get to share in it every single day.

A New Trend: "Pro-Choice" Pregnancy Centers — What It Means for Our Movement

by Andrea Trudden, Vice President of Communications and Marketingdownload 1

Across the nation, a small but growing trend is emerging that deserves our attention. Abortion advocates are beginning to launch their own versions of “pregnancy centers,” modeled after the life-affirming organizations you and I have faithfully served for decades. A recent Mother Jones article highlights one such example in Arkansas, where an abortion-support organization has opened what it calls a “pro-choice pregnancy center.” Others in Indiana and Ohio have similar models.

On the surface, these centers may look like ours: they offer free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, parenting classes, baby supplies, and even housing. For years, however, the very same voices now applauding these initiatives have criticized our centers as “fake clinics” and warned women to avoid us. The hypocrisy is clear—but so are the potential challenges this trend brings to our movement.

What This Could Mean for Pregnancy Help

  1. State Funding Competition
Many of our centers choose to operate independent of government funding, while others accept state support for certain of their educational programs. As some pro-abortion centers adopt the outward form of pregnancy help, some lawmakers and officials may see them as eligible for state funding. This could redirect taxpayer funds to support a pro-abortion mission and weaken the ability of pro-life organizations to serve women effectively.

  2. Marketing Confusion
To the public eye, both types of centers may appear similar. Without clarity, communities may not distinguish between life-affirming pregnancy help and abortion-connected initiatives. This could blur the identity of the pregnancy help movement, which has always been grounded in serving women and protecting life.

  3. Outreach Challenges
When “pro-choice” centers use similar language—offering “support,” “options,” or even “pregnancy resources”—it may confuse clients seeking authentic, life-affirming help. Women may not know if the place they walk into will actually champion both them and their babies.

What We Must Do Now

In this moment, it is more important than ever that our centers are crystal clear about WHO we are and WHAT we do.

  • Highlight What Sets You Apart
Emphasize the long-term, holistic support you offer: parenting classes, housing referrals, baby supplies, relationship resources, emotional and spiritual care—support that continues well beyond birth and at no cost to women.

  • Educate Your Supporters
Make sure donors, churches, and community partners understand the difference. They need to know that when they support your center, they are ensuring women and babies are embraced for the long haul—not steered toward abortion.

  • Stand firm on the Commitment of Care and Competence
As Heartbeat International affiliates, every center agrees to abide by Our Commitment of Care and Competence, which ensures services are provided with honesty, integrity, compassion, and the highest standard of care. This commitment—grounded in truth and professional excellence—is what sets pregnancy help organizations apart from any imitation. It guarantees that clients receive not only free and practical resources but also respect, dignity, and hope in their time of need.

  • Strengthen Your Outreach
Share real stories. Show the faces of families changed because of your work. Authentic testimony cuts through confusion and makes your mission unmistakable.

Our Call Forward

The emergence of “pro-choice pregnancy centers” underscores one powerful truth: the pregnancy help model works. The services you offer are so effective, compassionate, and necessary that even those who oppose our mission are imitating them.

Let us take this not as discouragement, but as confirmation that what you do every day is changing lives. As imitators arise, our task is to stand firm, speak clearly, and continue serving with loving, life-saving excellence—so there is never any doubt about the difference life-affirming pregnancy help makes.

Together, we will ensure that women in every community know the truth: we are here for them, we are here for their children, and we are here for life.

Trusting the Seeds You Are Planting — Taking Time to Collect the Harvest

by Kathy Jerman, Director of Affiliate ServicesAugust Take Heart Article 2

In the work we do, it’s easy to get caught up in what’s next—the next client, grant, or event. We talk about goals, impact, and growth. And rightly so. Numbers matter. But let’s not forget: people are the numbers. Every statistic is a name, a face, a life that matters deeply to God.

I want to share a story that reminds me to slow down and see the harvest right in front of me.

A Seed Planted

Over a decade ago, before I worked at a pregnancy center, I met Destiny. She was 18, newly pregnant, and scared. A mutual friend introduced us, and I invited her to the Teen MOPS group my friend Amy and I had just launched. Teen MOPS (Teen Mothers of Preschoolers) is a support group for young moms.

Destiny declined—shy, anxious, and overwhelmed. Not long after, she miscarried. I sent her a book that had brought me comfort during my miscarriage years earlier, and she thanked me sincerely. That simple gesture planted a seed.

Staying Connected

Destiny moved forward—working jobs, starting college—but stayed connected. While working at a pizza place, she convinced her manager to donate pizzas to our Teen MOPS group because she believed in what we were doing. Later, when pregnant again, she came—hesitant but brave. She found encouragement there and was inspired by the other young moms.

By the time her baby was born, I was on staff at our local pregnancy center, and a few years later, I became Executive Director. Destiny stayed in touch and, with each pregnancy, returned for ultrasounds.

Over the years, Amy, the nurse manager I had hired, and I walked with Destiny through parenting, relationship struggles, and life transitions. She donated gently used baby items, referred friends, and even told me about a community grant through her new job. We applied--and have received that grant every year.

A Critical Crossroads

Then came her fifth pregnancy. It was high-risk and came soon after her fourth. The pressure to abort was intense—even from her doctor’s office. She and Devin, now her fiancé, were scared and overwhelmed. They felt abortion was their only option. But in the middle of that storm, our team was there. At her ultrasound appointment, Amy gently walked Destiny through the facts and risks of abortion, while Devin spoke with one of our male advocates. Still, they left undecided.

Over the following weeks, Amy and I exchanged countless late-night texts with Destiny. She wrestled with fear, doubt, and exhaustion. We reminded her that she was already a loving mother—and that she and Devin were great parents. Raising a fifth child would be hard, yes—but so worth it.

The Turning Point

Early in the pregnancy, they took a family trip to Florida and passed several pro-life billboards. Destiny later told us, “It was like God was speaking directly to us.” That time away gave them space to reflect without outside pressure. The messages they saw helped shift their perspective. Together, they chose life.

A Full-Circle Moment

That baby—Dayanna—was featured in a video testimony we recorded for our fall banquet when Destiny was nearly nine months pregnant. They attended the banquet with their newborn in their arms. Afterward, Destiny told us,  “So many people thanked me for keeping my baby. It opened my eyes. People do care.”

A few months later, she invited Amy and me to witness her baptism. We stood beside her on stage as she shared her testimony, and I had the privilege of praying over her. That moment was one of those rare, sacred glimpses of God’s faithfulness—a powerful reminder of the life-affirming work we’re so privileged to be part of.

A Message I’ll Never Forget

Earlier this year, she texted me:

“Kathy, I mean this from the bottom of my heart. You're amazing. Thank you for convincing me to keep Dayanna.
She is my world… Your heart is so pure. ❤️ Love you, dude.”

Don’t Miss the Harvest

Friends, we are seed-planters. But if we don’t pause to look, we might miss the harvest that’s already growing. It may not come with applause or recognition. Sometimes, it’s seen in tiny hands and feet—or in the tearful testimony of a life forever changed.

“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Google Has Done It . . . Again!

by Liliana Grace

What do you think of their new search enhancements?marketing

In January, I shared about Gemini and encouraged you to watch for upcoming changes Google would be making. I emphasized to you that Gemini is something worth studying, and AI is here to stay.

In advertising, the trends continue to show a decrease in AdWords spending and efficiency.

A recent study by SEM Rush reported an average 30% decline in AdWords advertising budgets for the categories of health and beauty, home products, and grocery.  If the majors are shifting away from AdWords, where is all the money going? Data-based digital buying platforms. It’s as if they have been reading my blogs, too.

“Global programmatic ad spend is projected to reach $651 billion by 2025, accounting for over 82% of total digital ad spending.“

Google Ads are a force, no doubt. However, we can’t ignore that programmatic ad spend does a better job in reach, automation, ability to scale, and leverage data segmentation. It also offers the freedom to best utilize the proper digital format and build brand loyalty, as well as get the click. What is programmatic ad spend? It is the automated buying and selling of digital advertising space using software, algorithms, and data to deliver targeted ads in real time.

If you are relying on AdWords for your complete advertising strategy…, how do you feel now?

Remember the days when car dealers had large newspaper ads?  What happened? The culture changed, and so did their advertising. That industry adapted and went online. Can you even imagine referencing the newspaper to see what cars are for sale when you are shopping for your next car?

If the auto industry saw this and adapted, how can you adapt? Should you adapt?

The future of search is and has changed. This change is massively changing your advertising strategy, whether you realize it or not.

The impact in 1 – 2 years to your organization will be significant if your strategy doesn’t adapt.

Do all these advancements create a short attention span? Yes

Does it create an increased demand for customization and personalization?  Yes. Yes. And Yes

Access to information is faster and easier than ever before. That also means access to misinformation is readily available.

So, what does this mean, and how will this impact your clients and your donor marketing?

It means having a strategist for your marketing has never been more important than now.

What are 3 things you can do today?

  1. Review your advertising, digital strategy, and digital footprint.
    • Is it costing more to get the same results?
    • Are your results not what they used to be?
    • Have you diversified into multi-channel digital platforms (not just social, think bigger than AdWords)
    • Is your website optimized for mobile and AI search results?
  2. Personalize the Experience
    • What is the personal experience people have with your brand?
    • How are you expanding this? What is your community engagement strategy?
    • What is your donor and client retention strategy?
  3. Anchor this in knowing your Persona
    • All strategies need to be based on connecting with your Persona. (See April's article and reach out if you'd like the Persona card game)

In summary, understand AI and all the things that are here and still coming. The foundation of your marketing starts with a solid persona and viewing everything through their eyes. In all this impersonal technology, your client still wants the human experience. Look for opportunities to blend the proper use of technology in your marketing to increase efficiency, as well as add the unique human elements to customize their experience.

Believing and Receiving God's Love: The Foundation for Serving Others Well

by Tracie Shellhouse, Vice President of Ministry ServicesGods love at sunset

In the pregnancy help movement, we encounter women and families in some of the most vulnerable, complex, scary, and sacred moments of their lives. We sit with them as they weigh options, face fears, and wonder if there is any future on the other side of their present circumstances. We offer them compassion, truthful information, and practical support—but above all, we offer them hope. And at the very center of that hope is a truth that changes everything: God loves them. Deeply. Personally. Unconditionally.

Yet as we share this profound truth with those we serve, there’s a vital starting point that can’t be overlooked—we must believe and receive God’s love for ourselves.

His Love Is for You

It is far easier to talk about God's love than to truly live like we are loved. It’s common to pour out without pausing to be filled. We champion the value of others while secretly struggling to see our own. But the call to love others “as yourself” (Mark 12:31) means we cannot give what we do not first receive.

When we don’t fully believe and receive God’s love, we carry unspoken insecurities that quietly shape how we listen, lead, and serve. We must become comfortable being loved, not for what we do or how well we perform, but simply because we are His.

1 John 4:19 reminds us, “We love because He first loved us.” That’s where it begins—not with our strength or service, but with His initiating, freely given, sustaining love. We are loved. Chosen. Redeemed. Valuable.

His Love Is for Them

The women and men you serve must know they are seen and their stories–some heartbreaking, some beautiful, all sacred–matter because they matter. Their circumstances do not disqualify them. They are not forgotten. They are not beyond God’s reach. Their value isn’t earned. It comes from the One who knows everything about them–the good, the bad, and the ugly–and loves them fully and completely still.

Jeremiah 29:11 declares, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.’” These words are personal promises for each person you serve. God’s love remains steady, even in unexpected or difficult circumstances, and His plans remain good.

Helping clients understand their value begins with affirming their identity: You are made in the image of God. Your life is sacred. God loves you and has a purpose for you and your future. When we believe and receive God’s love for ourselves, we speak these words to others with an authenticity that reaches beyond the surface and introduces light into the darkness.

Living Loved to Serve Well

When we are rooted in God’s love, we know our worth, and we can call out the worth in others. When we live loved, we no longer operate from a place of lack. Instead, our trust in God’s love produces peace, which overflows from our lives into the lives of others. The mercy we extend reflects the mercy we’ve received. The grace we offer mirrors the grace that made us whole.

Romans 8:38-39 declares, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This is the unshakeable foundation on which we stand. And this is the foundation we offer to every client who walks through our doors. Yes, we give information, provide services, and offer resources. But at the root of it all is God’s unshakable, unstoppable, unconditional love.

So, before you pour out again, take a moment. Sit still. Let God’s love heal what is wounded, affirm what is true, and empower what is possible. Let Him love you. Because when we believe God’s love for ourselves, we become living proof to others that His love really does change everything.

Receive it. Believe it. Now, go give it away.
