How Abortion Pill Reversal Works

A chemical abortion commonly uses two drugs. The first, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, the hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy. The second, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

If a woman changes her mind after taking mifepristone, a medical professional may prescribe progesterone in an effort to counter the effects of the first drug and support the pregnancy. Treatment should begin as soon as possible, but every situation is different. Women are encouraged to call APRN even if they are unsure how much time has passed.

When a woman reaches out, an experienced nurse or trained consultant listens to her, gathers the information needed to assist her, and connects her with an appropriate medical professional. The provider evaluates her individual circumstances and determines the proper course of care. Abortion Pill Reversal has been shown to increase the likelihood that a pregnancy will continue, but no treatment can guarantee a particular outcome.

Care Grounded in Established Medicine

Progesterone is a naturally occurring hormone that has been used in pregnancy care for decades. The APR protocol applies that established treatment in an effort to counter the progesterone-blocking effects of mifepristone.

A peer-reviewed 2018 observational study of women who sought Abortion Pill Reversal reported:

  • Reversal rates of 64% to 68% with certain progesterone protocols
  • No apparent increase in birth defects compared with the general population
  • A preterm birth rate lower than the general population in the study group

Every patient is evaluated individually, and all treatment decisions are made under the supervision of a qualified medical professional.

Why This Work Is More Urgent Than Ever

Chemical abortion now accounts for the majority of abortions in the United States. Abortion pills can be ordered online and delivered directly to a woman’s home, often with little or no in-person medical interaction.

That access has changed how quickly an abortion can begin. A woman may take the first drug while she is alone, afraid, or under pressure. If regret follows, she needs immediate access to someone who will answer without judgment and help her explore whether continuing her pregnancy may still be possible.

APRN ensures that she is not left alone. Day or night, a trained member of the team is ready to answer, listen, and connect her with care.

Every Rescue Has a Name

Behind every number is a woman who found hope in a moment of fear and a child who was given another chance at life.

More than 200 women served by the Abortion Pill Rescue Network have signed an open letter expressing gratitude for the information, care, and support they received. Many have also shared photographs and stories of the children they now hold in their arms.

Their stories demonstrate why this work matters. When a woman changes her mind, she deserves to know that someone is ready to help.

Defending Her Right to Know

Despite the lives saved and the women who have publicly expressed gratitude for their care, information about Abortion Pill Reversal remains under attack. Government officials and abortion advocates have attempted to prevent pregnancy help organizations and medical professionals from telling women that another option may exist after taking mifepristone.

Heartbeat International is defending the right to share truthful information about APR and, most importantly, a woman’s right to seek care when she wants to continue her pregnancy.

Choice must include the freedom to change her mind.
