How Abortion Pill Reversal Works

A chemical abortion commonly uses two drugs. The first, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, the hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy. The second, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

If a woman changes her mind after taking mifepristone, a medical professional may prescribe progesterone in an effort to counter the effects of the first drug and support the pregnancy. Treatment should begin as soon as possible, but every situation is different. Women are encouraged to call APRN even if they are unsure how much time has passed.
